Style Icon: Victoria Beckham

Okay, you probably already know this but Victoria Beckham is the most amazing woman in the world. First off, she has a super hot husband.  Her kids are adorable.  She never smiles but is actually really funny and cute.

She ALWAYS wears heels because flat shoes are for quitters, and she has never been caught looking less than fabulous. Victoria Beckham is literally the chicest person on the face of the Earth.

Women Who've Shaped History: Anne Bancroft

Mrs. Robinson has seduced me.

Last night, due to caffeine and chronic insomnia, I could not fall asleep.  This happens way too frequently so I've developed a system: Instead of sleeping, I watch old movies.  And often that movie is 'The Graduate' because it's amazing and I love Simon & Garfunkel and it makes me cry.

As you all know Anne Bancroft plays Mrs. Robinson and while I hate her character, I am captivated by the beautiful and iconic woman that is Anne Bancroft.

Let's talk about the cover of the film.  It's HER LEGS.  She is so amazingly gorgeous and alluring that a coming-of-age tale wherein she is not even the object of his affection features her legs on the cover of the movie.

Anne Bancroft is seared into everyone's heads as the epitome of sex appeal and sophistication.

She made popular leopard print, pencil skirts with silky tops, and conservative nude suits.  And she didn't just dress this way in the movie.  She LIVED THIS LIFESTYLE.  She married Mel Brooks.  That is a f-cking party.  She had money and class and the life that every Jackie and Audrey wannabe yearned for.  And she rocked it.

So here's to you, Mrs. Robinson

Obsessed: Jennifer Lawrence for Dior

Preface: JLaw and I have a rocky past.  I hate 'The Hunger Games' books and movies and I didn't really want anything to do with her.  Plus I kind of thought she was not super cute.
But now, after 'Silver Linings Playbook' and lots of adorable interviews where she's silly and ridiculous and embarrassing herself, I'm pretty sold on her.  PLUS this happened (while in Dior):

ANYWAY Dior magazine puts out two issues a year.  Jennifer Lawrence is the star of the Fall/Winter issue of the magazine.

Photographer Mikael Jansson captured 'The Hunger Games' star and Oscar nominee JLaw in menswear and minimal make-up.  And wow, is it working.

Top Priority: Boy George's Christening

As you all know, I am completely, fantastically, unbelievably, over-the-moon in love with Kate Middleton.

Well now she has outdone herself by being more beautiful than ever at her son's christening.

The Duchess showed up looking incredible as always.  She wore a cream-colored dress designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen (RIP), who also designed her wedding dress.

Cuteness Footnote: The ruffle in her dress was designed to match the gown of the adorable baby, who just turned three months old.

Cuteness Footnote, Part Deux: That baby is fat.  And fat babies are just the greatest.

Trend Alert: The Beanie

Beanies are everywhere right now.  From celebs to fashion bloggers to non-super-humans, beanies are a smash hit.  Back in the day, beanies were not cool.  But now they're awesome.  Plus, because beanies are so huge right now, virtually any style/color/whatever you can think of is available to you.

My favorite place for absolutely everything is Etsy.  So my best advice is start there for something specific.  But I feel obligated to help you out more than that so let's check out some awesome beanies and how to wear them, shall we?  Yes, we shall.

What's New: 50 Shades of Nobody's Heard of You, Kimye is Getting Married, etc.

Sorry guys, I've taken a (very) long weekend but I'm back now so let's talk.

50 Shades- Jamie Dornan(???????) is the new Christian Grey.  I have no idea who that is so I looked into him and this is what I now know:

       He's hot.

He's foreign.  He's from Northern Ireland, I believe.

He's a former CK model.  This is everything you need to know about that.

He's married to Colin Farrell's ex wife.  Rude.

Apparently other people know who he is because he's on that show on ABC with            the chick from House.  I would never watch that because it looks stupid.

Kimye- He proposed to her.  That's all I know about because I don't care.  You can read about it (or watch it?) here.

DJ Pauly D- He has a daughter.  Probably from having skanky unprotected club sex.  But he's excited about it and he's not so bad compared to everyone else on that show so good job.  Mazel!

Jessica Brody- Morena Baccarin, wife of a terrorist and terrible mother on Homeland, had a baby boy!   I actually super like her because she's gorgeous was on Firefly back in the day which was amazing even though it didn't last (Sorry, Joss!) but she kind of got stuck with a not great role on Homeland.  ANYWAY, she had a baby boy named Julius.  Very cute.  Congrats!

Boston Rules- Boston slaughtered the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 in Game 1 of the World Series.

Listening To, Written by Isabel Grover

I’m baaaack. This week we will be discussing music (again) because I’m broke and can’t afford a $13 movie ticket. Snaps for YouTube for being free. Without further adieu:

Saint-Laurent
Coeur de Pirate

This song is old(ish), but it’s beautiful, so it deserves recognition from an under qualified reviewer such as myself. Coeur de Pirate is from Quebec and all of her songs are in French, which makes them 10 times better. Duh. If you are ever searching for inspiration this song, a pack of 27’s, and a mason jar full of merlot should do the trick.

Matt Corby ft. Bree Tranter
Big Eyes (Live)

If you haven’t heard of either of these artists, do yourself a favor and download all of their music immediately. Anything I say will not do this song justice, so drop whatever you’e doing and listen. Now.

WARNING: It might put you to sleep.

Terraplane Sun
Get Me Golden

These guys are cool beans. First off, they spell TERRAPL ∆NE like so, which I dig. Their sound is slightly reminiscent to that of The Black Keys, with more blues-y vibes. They’re still establishing themselves so their concert tickets are $10. Seriously, I just googled it. That’s amazing and music (literally) to my Jew ears.  If you can ignore the fact that the guitarist, Johnny Zambetti, quite possibly wears eyeliner, I think we’ve got ourselves a pretty solid listen.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have better things to do. Enjoy, fools.

Style Icon: Olivia Palermo

The mark of a style icon is when you would never wear what they wear but recognize their genius anyway.  This is how I feel about Olivia Palermo.

Olivia has no talent, no personality, and she's just a socialite (and model).  But she dresses better than most of the people in Hollywood and she doesn't have stylist.  She's amazing.

In addition to being simply gorgeous, Olivia rocks everything from ultrafeminine dresses to skinnies, blazers and flats.  She frequently wears black (which is fine because she lives in New York) and wears a lot of fur, which I would never do, but she pulls it off every time.  Let's review her best looks.

Formal:

Feminine:

Less feminine but still amazingly (arguably more) chic:

No matter the season, Olivia Palermo makes fashion her b-tch.

Women Who've Shaped History: Audrey Hepburn

In addition to being my favorite person in the world, Audrey Hepburn is responsible for perhaps the most iconic piece in fashion history.  If you are a human and English is your native language you have seen the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Well, Holly Golightly wears this dress:

The dress was made for Audrey in 1961 by Hubert de Givenchy.  They were close friends and he not only designed and made the dress for her, but styled her accessories, which included a huge string of pearls and her trademark cigarette holder.
So you are probably a woman.  And you probably own a "little black dress."  And for that, you can thank Audrey Hepburn and Givenchy.

Footnote: This dress went for auction at Christie's in London in 2006.  They estimated the dress would sell for between £50,000-70,000.  The dress sold for £467,200.  That's $923,187.

Top Priority: Vogue Loves Malaika Firth

Okay THIS IS A HUGE DEAL.

Malaika Firth is growing in popularity after she walked in Prada's 2013 Fall Show as well as being the face of Prada (the first model of color since Naomi Campbell in 1994).  Which is massive on its own.

But now she's also going to be gracing the cover of Vogue.  Offfficailly it's the fashion supplement of the November issue of Vogue UK but we'll take it.  The issue also includes a feature on Malaika.

Vogue has caught a lot of flack for a lack of black women on their covers, so this is a massive step in the right direction.

Also she's only 19.  Which is f-cking nuts.  Congrats, Malaika!

Obsessed: Mirrored Shades

So a month ago ish my best gay friend came to visit and we went sunglass shopping (obviously).  We are loyal Ray Ban shoppers so he got an updated version of the Clubmaster that are a little more square on the bottom.

Who cares.  Anyway I bought a pair of mirrored aviators and they are DOPE.  Actually Ray Ban called them "Flash Lenses" which is maybe the coolest thing ever.  I love them because I have worn Ray Ban aviators since I was in 9th grade but they're updated so I'm not bored.

More importantly, I've seen a bunch of people wearing them, including my only fashion-forward heterosexual male friend, so that's a good sign.  So if you're into spending $150 on sunglasses, do invest in a pair of Ray Bans.
Get Like Me: Aviators
Bolder: Cats
Folding: Wayfarers

Other good options include Carrera, which come in a zillion colors, or  Gargyle, which are a little more expensive but certainly unique.

So go rush out and buy a pair immediately.  And make your friends get some too so you can look at yourself all the time but no one can yell at you.

Footnote: Another amazing thing about these is they discourage "selfies" because you can see the person holding the phone in the picture which looks stupid and then everyone knows that person has no friends to take pictures of them and it's all terrible.

Trend Alert: (Faux) Leather Skirts

This is wicked popular right now and I'm not crazy about it but we can talk about it anyway because you should always be up-to-date.

From the runway to celebs to fashion bloggers, this trend is huge.  Sometimes it can be cute and sometimes not.  Anyway we'll go over how to wear it and wear you can get one, etc.

The Mini- If you have great legs, do this immediately because it looks hot.  A good way to balance out the "tough-ness" of the leather is a softer top- a t-shirt or (cashmere) sweater will work perfectly.  For daytime, wear with sandals while you still can or booties. At night- the higher the heel, the better.
BUY: ASOS

The Pencil- Wearing a flowy colorful top can help balance out the shape of the pencil skirt nicely.  If you want to dress, it down, a graphic tee works.  Pair with pumps, or flats if you're less hardcore.
BUY: Topshop

Fit and Flare- Something simple should go on top- a t-shirt or tank this time of year would be perfect with a cardigan.  This would be a good time to wear tights under your skirt if you're interested.  Wear this with simple shoes oxfords or booties.
BUY: BCBGMaxAzria

Pleated- Go for classic and keep it simple with a button-down, preferably in a solid color but pick whatever color you want.  Pairing this with combat boots looks unique.  And badass.
BUY: Piperlime

So go forth and wear leather.  Keep it vegan!  Just kidding I don't care.
